Superbowl weekend is approaching. This year is sure to be a little strange, it won’t resemble NFL championships of the past but at least we will get some sense of familiarity out of coming together and rooting against Tom Brady. Even if he is in a different jersey.

Tampa, Florida, and the NFL are allowing 22,000 fans, including 7,000 health care professionals, to enjoy the game in person, spread out across Raymond James Stadiums 65,000 seats.

The Weeknd will be performing songs from his new album, (and hopefully others) at the halftime show. Will fans be allowed on the field during the performance? Is the field going to be empty? Fans but spread six feet apart? We don’t know. It will definitely be an unusual halftime performance.

Some changes are in store for those of us not lucky enough to attend the game in Tampa as well. Having a massive Superbowl party probably isn’t the best idea and going to a packed bar won’t be available for much of the country.

Alcohol is a major part of Superbowl tradition. But this year being a little different, why not add cannabis to your Superbowl experience instead?

Superbowl Edibles

Chicken wings being the #1 Superbowl snack according to The Daily Meal, we decided to share a cannabis-infused buffalo wing recipe for your enjoyment.

Step #1 Decarboxylation

The first step in creating any cannabis edible is activating the THCa. Without this step, you will have delicious chicken wings, but they will not get you high. The process of converting THCa into THC is called decarboxylation. Most users do this by lighting the dry cannabis on fire. To feel the effects of edibles, the THCa must be converted before consumption.

For this recipe, you will need 3.5 – 5 grams of dry flower. Preheat the oven to 245 degrees. Place the buds on a non-stick baking sheet. Allow 30-40 minutes for the THCa to decarboxylate. Take the baking sheet out of the over and grind up the weed. Your cannabis is now ready to infuse.

Step #2 Canna-butter

Making cannabis butter is our favourite way to infuse into edibles. Any recipe can be infused with cannabis as long as it asks for butter.

Melt the ¾ cups of butter in a medium saucepan. Add the ground up flower. Let simmer between 160 - 200 degrees for 2-3 hours. DO NOT BOIL.

Once the butter is done, you need to filter out the plant matter. Place a cheesecloth (or tee-shirt) over a funnel and run the butter through the cloth into a clean plastic bowl.

Let the butter sit in the refrigerator over-night.

Done! You have about a ½ cup of usable cannabis butter ready to be cooked into your Superbowl snack.

Step #3 Buffalo Wing Sauce

To make THC infused chicken wings, there are a few routes you can take. You could dredge the wings in a cannabis-infused buttermilk batter and fry them, a great method for breaded fried chicken.

We recommend infusing the sauce with the canna-butter instead. This way, if you have any left-over you can add to other foods. Making a sauce is much easier and less messy than dredging.

To make a simple wing sauce combine all the ingredients below in a saucepan:

• 2/3 cup Frank’s RedHot Sauce
• ½ cup of homemade canna-butter
• 1 ½ tablespoon of white vinegar
• ¼ teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
• 1/8 teaspoon garlic powder
• Salt to taste

Simmer ingredients until the sauce starts to boil. Remove from heat and set aside.

*Warning*

This buffalo sauce is spicy and will get you incredibly high if you were to consume all of it in one sitting. If you aren’t trying to consume five grams before half time, maybe make some THC-free teriyaki sauce as well.

Step #4 Cook the Wings

Cooking chicken wings can be done a million different ways. We prefer to grill and bake.

Salt and pepper the wings. Grill on high heat for about 2 minutes on each side. You’re looking for a nice char.

Dunk the wings in the sauce and bake for 20 minutes.

You can add additional sauce for wings that require having paper towels on standby.

Step #5 Enjoy with Caution

Everyone has an edible story that starts with "we didn’t feel anything, so we ate triple the recommended dose…"

Eat a few wings and wait a half hour to see how you feel. Remember how much weed you put into the butter. And most importantly, enjoy the game!

You have some buffalo wing sauce that will make for an interesting second half and you’ve just learned how to decarboxylate THC in the oven. Hopefully, next year the Superbowl won’t have any covid-19 restrictions, but don’t count on Tom Brady to not somehow make his way on our TV screens.
