Back in the days, most people would think that simply leave your stash in a Ziploc bag under your mattress was how you store your cannabis. Dry, mouldy and basically wasted weed was and still is common, unfortunately. Properly stored cannabis can be safely kept for up to two years granted that the cannabis has been cured.

Today I will show you the best way to store your cannabis and the common mistakes people will do while thinking they are properly storing their weed.

What Can Degrade Your Cannabis

Oxygen is one of the biggest reasons why your weed can degrade over time. That’s right, too much oxygen in contact with your buds will degrade the cannabinoids and terpenes and too little oxygen might change the humidity level and cause mould. Choosing a container that won’t be too big for the quantity of weed stored so that not too much oxygen gets trapped inside the container. Too much air means a risk of further degradation of important compounds.

Another big factor when it comes to degrading the quality of your stash is light. UV rays can have a significantly negative impact by burning the compounds responsible for all the benefits and effects of your weed. So choosing a dark and cool place such as a cupboard, socks drawer or a closet shelf is imperative.  The same way light can affect your weed, Moisture is a big factor in proper storage. Too much moisture can be potentially dangerous and is a big precursor to mould forming on your buds. On the opposite. Not enough moisture will cause your precious stash to dry out, destroying terpenes and cannabinoids. The perfect moisture level is between 58 RH and 64RH. RH stance for relative humidity or the moisture amount present in the air volume. In the percentage of humidity, the recommended level is between 40% and 50%.

Temperature also plays a key factor in maintaining healthy storage conditions for your dried herbs. High temperatures will dry out your buds and evaporates which can kill the flavour and terpenes profile and harsher smoke. The importance of keeping your stash inside your house and not in the shed is primordial as any temperature over 78 degrees might cause mould or mildew to start forming on your bud.

Common Mistakes Done When Storing Cannabis

  • Using tobacco humidifier
Those small boxes are often made out of plastic or cedarwood and can hinder the delicate taste of your buds. Tobacco is meant to be kept at a higher humidity level than weed. Boveda pouches are specially made for keeping or restoring the perfect level of humidity for your cannabis. They guarantee to not mess the flavour and shield the terpene profile of your buds.
  • Store your weed in a Mason jar
With how cheaply you can buy a pack of tiny mason jars at any stores around, it is a no-brainer to use those air-tight glass containers to ensure a long shelf-life of your favourites strains. Avoid plastic containers as it can mess with the overall taste of your smoke and is rarely completely air-tight.
