Walmart closing east Hamilton Mountain store, renovating Upper James Street Supercentre

The Walmart location near Mohawk Road East and Upper Sherman Avenue is closing.

Walmart Canada is closing a store in Hamilton's east Mountain as it looks to upgrade other stores across the country.

The location near Mohawk Road East and Upper Sherman Avenue in the County Fair plaza near Macassa Park will close this summer, said Adam Grachnik, Walmart's corporate affairs director.

"The store employs approximately 147 associates and all associates will be offered positions at nearby Walmart locations," he wrote in an email.

"There are six other Walmart locations in the Hamilton area."

$4.6 million in renovations coming to Upper James Street store

The Mountain has a supercentre some three kilometres away on Upper James Street. That's roughly a 30 minute bus ride or 40 minute walk from the County Fair location.

Grachnik said $4.6 million will go into renovating and improving that supercentre. He said the company also recently renovated the Ancaster location.

The roughly 147 employees at the east Mountain location will be offered jobs at other local stores, and Walmart is investing  $4.6 million into the supercentre on Upper James Street. 

This is part of the chain's recent announcement to invest more than $500 million this year to improve more than 60 percent of its stores.

Walmart said the investments are focused on modernizing and digitizing shopping.

The company reported a fiscal year 2021 revenue of $559 billion.
