We’ve all been stuck in quarantine and lockdowns for quite a while now and Canadians are spending more time than usual inside the house bored and looking for things to do. Many have been using cannabis products as a means to relax, calm the mind and body to relieve some of the anxiety we’ve all been suffering from since March last year.

Give your lungs a little break and make yourself a few cups of cannabis tea is a great option to get high and relaxed without having to rip a big bowl and coughing your lungs out. An important detail to know is the difference between a tea and a tisane. Tea is usually a beverage containing Camellia sinensis/assamica, essentially green tea. As opposed to an infusion of cannabis plant matter, leaves, stems or buds are considered a tisane. Here’s a nice and quick recipe to make yourself a teasane.

How To Make Cannabis Tea

A few different methods can be used to infuse your hot drink with marijuana’s beneficial effects. A more-time consuming option but will most likely yield the most potency out of your tea would be to decarboxylate your cannabis first before starting to infuse it into your drink. Here’s a guide (refer to my how to make tincture blog ) if you wanna know how exactly you can decarboxylate your weed safely at home. But simply put, this would add an hour to your process before starting to make your cannabis tea. Instead, here’s a proven recipe that is quick to make and will give you a great end result for a fraction of the time.

The THC molecules need a fatty agent to stick to when put under high temperature otherwise the terpenes and cannabinoids will be destroyed. By latching onto the fat cells, the THC and terpenes can stay intact and activates to give your hot drink an extra kick with soothing benefits for the mind and body.

For scaling purposes, you can use half or double of the numbers below depending on your need.

  1. You will need 4 cups of water and bring it to a boil.
  2. Lower your temperature as much as possible to a light simmer to allow the fragile terpenes and cannabinoids to not burn off in the high heat.
  3. Premix a tablespoon of grass-fed butter, MCT oil or coconut oil with one gram of ground weed making sure every little piece of cannabis is coated in a fatty agent to promote the maximum yield.
  4. Add your mix to simmering water for a minimum of 15 mins.
  5. Turn off the heat and you can then add your loose green tea leaves to make a tea or any other flavour agents you usually prefer for your cup of tea.
  6. Strain the mixture with a coffee filter or cheesecloth to remove the bitsy pieces of weed.

Many report Chai tea being a great combination with cannabis as it masks most of the weedy taste if you find it overpowering. Add turmeric to promote healthy metabolism, ginger, honey cinnamon for a tasty tisane.
