If you have not visited the Calgary Zoo, you are missing out on a classic Calgary experience. Calgary is an interesting city with a variety of things to do, but people often don’t know exactly what to do, especially since the weather can be so temperamental. The winters are brutally cold, while the summers can be California-hot. In the summer, you may have sun, rain, and hail all in one day. Which is why finding an activity can be hard.

Being one of the biggest Zoos in Canada, the Calgary zoo can be a super fun day-time activity… especially after taking an edible or smoking a joint. Calgarians often forget about the zoo even though it is literally in the middle of the city. The zoo itself is built onto a small island created by the Bow River in downtown Calgary. We believe the Calgary Zoo deserve more attention, so we are going to get you pumped on what animals can be found at the zoo so that you can have your next high-adventure at the zoo.

Bears

Nothing will satisfy your Canadian vacation like seeing some Canadian wildlife. While you could go on a road trip out to Kananaskis or Banff to scout out some moose or bears, the chances of those sightings is very few-and-far-between. Which is why the Calgary Zoo has a Canadian Wildlife exhibit. Bears are featured in this exhibit, and they are super fun to watch. Bears aren’t necessarily the type of wildlife you want to run into when you are on a hike, so getting to see them in the zoo is a great alternative -- and it will still make you feel like you got a Canadian experience.

Hippos

Did you know that when Calgary flooded in 2013, there were two hippos that escaped their enclosure? Sounds like a plot to a movie right? Well, it actually happened. Luckily, the building that their enclosure was in was able to be locked up before they fully escaped and could have been swimming freely in the Bow River. Hippos are some of the most dangerous mammals on the planet, so it would have been a nightmare if they had escaped. Thankfully, that did not happen and you can still safely view them in their enclosure at the zoo. Just make sure you stand back, because hippos like to spray their poop around.

Penguins

The Calgary zoo has four different types of penguins in their exhibit. Gentoo Penguins, Humboldt Penguins, King Penguins and Rockhopper Penguins all inhabit the exhibit at the zoo. Penguins are probably one of the more lively species to watch at the zoo because they are so active. They are always running around, jumping in and out of the water, or if you're lucky, sometimes they slide down the ice and plunge into the water. Plus, they are undeniably cute.

Big Cats

Big cats are common at most zoos, but the ones at the Calgary zoo are a must-see. The Calgary zoo has Amur Tigers, African Lions, Snow Leopards, and Cougars. Big cats are typically nocturnal, but even seeing a big cat up close is a stirring experience. They appear to be cute and cuddly, but knowing that they are some of the most scheming hunters in the animal kingdom is very thrilling.

Gorillas

Watching Gorilla’s is a strange experience because they are different, yet so familiar to human beings. Gorilla’s are fascinating in the way that they are so human-esque. Watching gorilla’s live their lives is kind of like watching human kids interact with one another. They pick each other’s ears, groom their hair, use their fingers to peel bananas, and fight with one another. Make sure to check out the gorilla’s and other ape-like creatures at the Calgary zoo.
