As a good rule of thumb, you should be dumping your old smelly water every day or after every use and put fresh cold water back in before every toke. Bacteria will eventually form and can be potentially harmful when inhaled in considerable quantities. Visually inspect your pipe to make sure no residue or white film remains on the inside surface of it. You can always repeat the process if your rig is really nasty or you haven’t shaken long enough.

Use q-tips and a long straw brush to reach elbows and scrub away any resins left. Rinse with water thoroughly after and you can always use a little dish soap and water to finish and clean the exterior of your bong as well as the mouthpiece section.
