Arguably one of the best ways to truly taste a strain is by using a weed pipe or often referred to as a water bong. Water bongs are a very clean and efficient way to get high. Your hands won’t be smelling of smoky weed, you only need to light up a small quantity of ground weed when compared to a joint to get the same high effect as a lot of your joint will just burn up in the air as you blaze, losing precious smoke in the process and looking at how expensive weed gets nowadays, it would be wise to make your ganja last as much as possible.

Those weed pipes are a great tool for smoking and enjoying the terpenes profile of your product but it comes a time when it starts to smell and the water looks gross. It’s cleaning time! Let’s look at the best way to properly clean your bong, a few signs worth paying attention to know when it’s time for your rig to get cleaned and the products needed to do a great job without breaking the bank.

The smell is one of the first clues telling you it’s time to clean your glass. As a good rule of thumb, you should be dumping your old smelly water every day or after every use and put fresh cold water back in before every toke. Bacteria will eventually form and can be potentially harmful when inhaled in considerable quantities. Even if you are a casual smoker and only use your weed pipe a few times a week, the heat and stagnant water can speed up the process of bacteria and mould forming inside the pipe.  As soon as you start seeing a little ring form at the surface of the waterline, it’s a sign you should clean your bong.

What product you need to clean your bong

If you wanna fancy it and use dedicated products which are specially made for water pipe cleaning, here are a few options that have the best reviews and are the most popular in the community:

Agent Orange
Although not cheap, Agent Orange is a popular product known by most as one of the best pipe cleaners there is. Made out of all-natural and renewable resources, it is considered earth-friendly unlike some other pipe cleaners containing harsh chemicals

Formula 420
This plastic and acrylic cleaner is on the high-end side of pipe cleaner as well but for those who have acrylic bongs, this product might be your go-to cleaner to use to keep your expensive rig clean and in shape.

Isopropyl Alcohol 99%
Is widely recognized as the cheapest and most effective solvent to use. A 4 litres jug will cost you less than CA$30 and can last for at least half the year depending on the volume of your weed pipe. Pair your isopropyl with Epsom Salt or any coarse salt to add an abrasive agent to your cleaning formula.

You only need to fill your weed pipe about 5-10% of the total volume of your rig giving you plenty of air space inside the bong to make the cleaner and simply give it a good shake for a few minutes. Visually inspect your pipe to make sure no residue or white film remains on the inside surface of it. You can always repeat the process if your rig is really nasty or you haven’t shaken long enough.

Use q-tips and a long straw brush to reach elbows and scrub away any resins left. Rinse with water thoroughly after and you can always use a little dish soap and water to finish and clean the exterior of your bong as well as the mouthpiece section.

This whole process takes no more than 10 minutes and should be done at least once a week to prevent mould and bacteria from forming but allowing you to enjoy the most out of the taste of your favourite strains.

Happy smoking.
